One of our clients built his entire estate agency by sitting in his pants until three in the morning, handwriting envelopes, sealing them and getting maybe three hours’ sleep before doing his actual day job.
No team. No system. Just him, a stack of off-market envelopes, and whatever energy he had left after a full day of estate agent work.
He mentioned it almost as an aside. We were running him through his latest campaign, the letters, the envelopes, the usual update, and he said it brought back memories. So we asked him to explain.
The Two-Person Operation
Once the business grew a bit, he stopped doing it all himself. He outsourced the printing to one place, and the envelope writing and stamping to another.
That’s where the story gets better.
He told us he could always tell when the woman stamping his envelopes had made it to her second bottle of wine, because the stamps started going on wonky. For most businesses, a slightly crooked stamp wouldn’t matter. For a luxury estate agent, it does. Stamps need to be straight. It’s a small thing, and it’s a lot harder to get right at scale than anyone would guess.
The Bit That Actually Matters
It’s a strange thing to picture: a grown man in his pants at 3am, sealing envelopes by hand, one stamp at a time, because he believed it would work.
That’s not the kind of thing anyone does casually. Nobody hand-addresses hundreds of envelopes through the night unless they’ve seen it get results. The dedication only makes sense in hindsight, once you know it worked.
He’s still a client now and does this every quarter. We handle the whole thing for him, printing, stuffing, stamping, sealing, writing, so nobody has to lose sleep over it anymore. He’s just launched a second estate agency.
Why This Story Is the Point, Not Just a Nice Anecdote
Most businesses don’t send handwritten letters. It’s odd, it’s slower, and it doesn’t scale the way an email campaign does. That’s exactly why it works. Doing something different, consistently, is still one of the more reliable ways to be remembered in a market where almost everyone is doing the same thing the same way.
An estate agent lost sleep over stamps being straight because he understood something that’s easy to forget: the effort shows, even in the parts nobody’s supposed to notice.
If you’re an agent reading this and wondering whether handwritten mail could work for you, get in touch. We’ll manage the whole process, start to finish, no need to lose any sleep over it.
